Sadie Barcus-A Salineville Legend

In 1888 near the Town of Salineville, there was a young woman named Sadie.  She loved animals and had several dogs.  She was very shy and the townsfolk thought her a bit odd.  Perhaps too odd because Legend says that one night a group of people from Salineville went to Sadie's little cabin in the woods and accused her of being a witch.  They tied her to her bed and ushered all her dogs in the room with her.  They then locked them in and burned down the cabin down.
Some say that if you go to the site of her home at midnight you can hear her screaming in agony as the fire engulfed her.  The howls of her dogs accompany her.
This story is the Legend I first heard about in 2008 in a message on myspace. Since then we have discovered that Sadie or rather Sarah Barcus, really did exist.  She didn't die in 1888 however.  The year was 1947 and she was 93 years old.  It states on her death certificate that she was cremated in a house fire, along with her little terrier dog.
Somehow, from the real story sprang a legend of a witch and a haunting.  That is how many legends begin. Usually there is some little bit of truth where the Legend begins.
Sadie's name is also used occasionally in the Maple Farm Murders story from the Salineville area as a hooker who was murdered and thrown into a latrine. I am still looking for an approximate date to look that one up at the library.  It happened in the 70s.  From what I understand, two men were murdered in a drug deal and cut up with a chain saw and thrown into an out house.   No women were involved in that one at all and yet her name is occasionally used in that story.
Sadie was a real person who loved  animals and was well loved in her community.  That needs to be said and remembered.  It is why we use the 1888 version of the story we have heard.  Her real name was Sarah, and that is also why we use Sadie.  We are looking for other stories about Salineville.  Another name given to us, claiming this woman to be a witch is Elizabeth Costello.  Her grave is supposed to have chains around it.  We are looking to find it.  If you know where it might be, please let me know!

yes the grave with the chains around it can be found in the hanoverton ohio grave yard 15 mins out side of salineville, i have been there and it is said that when all the iron chains break the witch will rise again, the supposed witch was a preachers daughter, hanoverton offers several historical and quite imformational "ghost walks" througout the year

Sadies son tied her to the bed because she had altzheimers and he didn't want her wondering off while he was out. The dogs knocked over a lantern and it caught the house on fire and she burned to death. The grave with chains is really a grave with rot iron fence around it you can find it in the catholic cemetery on foundry hill

Is this a second woman & story (myth) of a woman with a grave site with chains around it? There is a grave site in the Catholic Cemetery on Foundry Hill Rd in Salineville. The grave is cemented (only one)...chains was removed prob 5 or 6 yrs ago. This grave site is located along the wood line of the cemetery. Needless to say, when ppl found out the chains had been removed, many freaked out...but guess what, NO WITCH WAS RELEASED....all myths, gossip, & lies of a dead woman, who is the only one who could tell us the true story.

I looked into that story. What I was told was two different stories. One said she was someones mistress. Another said she was a beloved former slave who lived with a family in Salineville was part of their family.
They loved her and buried her with their love. I like the second story best.

Christina Costanza is the name on the grave stone and it is located in St Patricks cemetery on Foundry Hill in Salineville along the right hand side of the woods as you go in. Go into the woods a little further from Christina's grave there was said to be a warlocks grave.

Christina Costanza is her name. Her resting place is St Patricks Cemetry on Foundry Hill in Salineville along the right hand side of the woods. It was also said that a little further into the woods from Christina's grave was a warlocks grave. Her grave site is a concrete slab with 6 concrete poles and a very heavy chain running through them. It was said to keep her spirit chained down. There used to be a porcaline picture of her on the grave stone but someone destroyed it many years before I ever seen it.

I'm from Salineville. The grave does have chains on it (or it did when I was a teenager). The house was burnt down with her in it and yes she was tied to the bed. The "well" killings were long after that and it was a so called bike gang. The one man who was sent to prison was released around 1997. I know this because I was walking out of an establishment with my mother and he tried to speak with me. My mother said lets go and explained who he was and what he had done. I have been back to both areas. They are side by side as far as the properties go.

I used to cut the grass in cematary where the witch was burried. When i was younger the chains were still around her grave, but over the years they were yorn off by teenagers. I grew up 1/4 mile down the road from spook halla, or timme rd where sadies cabin was.born and raised in salineville ohio lol. I havent been ghost hunting in years, but in my teenage years we would cruz around and spend hours at local sites trying to take pics of ghost. I have a few stories myself. I also have a disc full of orbs and such we picked up on our cammeras. Your more then welcome to hit me up if youd like me to show you where the whiches grave lies.
